For Immediate Release:

(eWebWire.com) June 22, 2010 — WORLD WIDE WEB, June 22, 2010 (FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE) — Identity theft is a very serious crime that continues to grow within the United States. Anyone can be victimized, and if targeted, the consequences can be devastating. Stolen credit reports, bad credit history, collection agencies calling for money on purchases you didn’t make, are just some of the many repercussions of falling prey to this unfortunate crime. However, there are ways to protect oneself and avoid becoming a victim.

World Progress Report with Joan Lunden recently partnered with the FBI to produce a segment focused on educating the public on how to better prepare themselves against identity thieves. The segment cautions consumers to not only store their personal identification information in a secure place, but also encourages people to shred important documents rather than just throwing them away. The best way to dispose of data and sensitive and personal information is to shred. Shred everything you have. Shred receipts that may have card numbers, shred old bills, shred anything that may have your personal information. Shred it. Do not ever dispose of personal information intact.

Making sure documents are properly stored or destroyed is critical, if you plan on properly safeguarding your identity. “By partnering with the FBI and gaining their knowledge on how to combat identity theft, we hope our Public Television segment can help educate viewers on how to better protect themselves against this growing scam,” said the Executive Producer of the series.
