Each category of food is important for health, and we should eat from each group.
Whether your body uses fat or carbohydrate as the main source of fuel depends upon your exercise intensity and duration. Carbohydrate is arguably the most important source of energy for athletes because it provides the energy that fuels muscle contractions. Athletes need protein primarily to repair and rebuild muscle that is broken down during exercise. Protein also helps optimize carbohydrate storage in the form of glycogen.
Proper hydration is especially important during exercise. Adequate fluid intake for athletes is essential to comfort, performance and safety. The longer and more intensely you exercise, the more important it is to drink the right kind of fluids. Although rare, recreational exercisers are also at risk of drinking too much water and suffering from hyponatremia or water intoxication. Clearly, drinking the right amount of the right fluids is critical for performance and safety while exercising.
"If you are looking for the best way to refuel your body after long, strenuous endurance exercise, a 4:1 combo of carbohydrate and protein seems to be your best choice. While solid foods can work just as well as a sports drink, a drink may be easier to digest make it easier to get the right ratio and meet the 2-hour window,"said James McKillop.
