(eWebWire.com) June 06, 2010 — WORLD WIDE WEB, June 06, 2010 (FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE) — Each day an estimated 160,000 children refuse to go to school because they dread the physical and verbal aggression of their peers, and the loneliness that comes from being excluded and made the target of rumors and cyber-bullying. Many more students attend school in a chronic state of anxiety.

Unfortunately, teasing is often part of growing up — almost every child experiences it. But it isn't always as innocuous as it seems. Words can cause pain. Teasing becomes bullying when it is repetitive or when there is a conscious intent to hurt another child.

Educators need to develop prevention and intervention strategies that address the needs of all children involved (bullies, victims and witnesses) and to coordinate efforts across elementary, middle, and high schools and the community. We know that zero tolerance policies are not effective in stopping aggression in schools and expulsion also appears to be ineffective.

"The task ahead is to take what we now know about the complexity of bullying and translate it into effective practice, in homes, schools and communities," said Claudio Cerullo.
